A health screen can identify ways in which you can improve your health and give you advance warning of any health problems you may have or may be likely to develop. If any further testing or care is needed, we offer rapid referral to our specialist consultants.

40+ health check

This assessment with our GP Dr Andrew Black has been designed to allow you to take control of your own health, while giving you a better understanding of both your health now and how to maintain and improve it for the future. You’ll complete an initial questionnaire, which will allow Dr Black to review your current health status, along with a range of tests to allow a full picture of your health and areas to focus on.

What’s included in your 40+ health check?

You’ll meet one of our trained nurses who will undertake a number of tests in preparation for your consultation with Dr Black.

These include:

  • Blood pressure test
  • Height and weight measurement
  • An ECG
  • Blood tests and urine analysis.

What is an ECG?

An ECG is an electrocardiograph, which is a tracing of your heart. We have included this as allows us to look for abnormalities in your heart. In particular we can check that your heart is beating regularly. We know that an irregular heartbeat can increase your risk of strokes. While some people are aware if their pulse is irregular, others aren’t. The ECG is also helpful in assessing if the hearts’ structure has changed either due to high blood pressure or due to ischaemia.

What blood tests will I have?

The following is a list of the blood tests that you will undergo. Dr Black will explain in detail about the tests required and what they mean for you as part of your time with him.

  • Full blood count
  • Urea and electrolytes
  • Liver function tests
  • Lipid profile
  • Thyroid function
  • B12 and Folate
  • Vitamin D
  • HbA1c.

Men

  • PSA
  • Testosterone.

Women

  • Ca-125.

Other tests

  • Urine ACR
  • FIT (fecal immunochemical test) Test.

What happens next?

Once you’ve had your appointment with the nurse, the results of all the tests will go directly to Dr Black. He will then review these in preparation for your appointment in a couple of weeks’ time. This is to allow time for all the tests to be processed accurately.

What happens at my review appointment?

At the review appointment you will meet Dr Black, our experienced GP, and he will spend 30 minutes with you going through the results of all the tests and what they mean for you. Dr Black will answer any of your questions and concerns, and will advise you on any further action that might be required. You will get a personalised summary following this, which will give you all your results and advice about how to maintain and improve your health.
