CT calcium scoring (or cardiac calcium scoring) at Manchester Diagnostic Suite
- Overview
CT calcium scoring is a CT scan to check for deposits or build-up of plaque on the walls of your coronary arteries (arteries that supply blood to your heart).
Heart disease is an increasingly common problem, in the UK there is 1 heart attack every 2 minutes. If a problem is discovered early enough however, you can take steps to reduce your risk of having a heart attack.
At Manchester Diagnostic Suite we use Calcium Scoring CT scanning to detect calcium in your coronary arteries. The presence of calcium shows that you are likely to have coronary artery disease. This test allows us to detect coronary artery disease at an early stage before significant blockages have developed, - potentially years before standard health screening or exercise ECG would detect disease. Early detection allows you and your doctor to formulate specific personalised management plans to reduce your future risk, rather than relying on conventional risk estimates.
Why should I have this scan?
- Normal results will give you peace of mind
- If you’re at higher risk, advice will be given to help reduce and lower your chances of a heart attack
- A non-invasive way of evaluating whether you may be at increased risk of a heart attack
Can I self-refer for a CT Calcium Score scan?
If you are male and over the age of 40, or female and over the age of 45, and you also tick yes to one or more of the following criteria, you can self-refer:
- Family history of heart disease
- Past or present smoker
- History of high cholesterol
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Inactive lifestyle

If you do not meet the self-referral criteria but would still be interested in finding out more about your specific cardiac risk – either with a CT Calcium score or an alternative test depending on your circumstances, you can arrange a consultation with one of our expert cardiologists to guide you further:
