nSTRIDE® Autologous Protein Solution (APS) at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospital
- Overview
Or call us on
nSTRIDE® APS is an autologous (from your own body) protein solution treatment that is designed to treat the joint pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.
What is nSTRIDE® APS?
nSTRIDE® is a small injection into your knee joint of good proteins concentrated from your own blood. It's designed to alleviate pain and bring balance back to your inflamed knee. These good proteins can block the bad proteins which are responsible for the inflammatory condition in your joint. Other good proteins can then contribute to the health of your cartilage.
What are the benefits of nSTRIDE® APS?
In just one injection, nSTRIDE® can:
- Reduce pain in the knee joint
- Reduce stiffness
- Restore mobility and function
- Potentially help slow the destruction of cartilage
How long do the benefits of treatment last?
Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of one injection and suggest the benefits of one injection can last up to 24-36 months. More recently collected data has shown some patients can have pain relief for up to five years.
Is nSTRIDE® APS right for me?
You may be a candidate for the nSTRIDE® treatment if you’re suffering from early or moderate state osteoarthritis and no other therapies have worked for you.
What happens during nSTRIDE® APS treatment?
Blood is drawn from a vein in the arm and white blood cells and a small amount of plasma is harvested from this sample. The blood is then processed to make high concentrations of anti-inflammatory proteins and these proteins are then injected into the affected area.
The treatment is performed in an outpatient clinic, and takes approximately 30 minutes.
nSTRIDE® APS recovery
Patients may experience some localised pain and swelling from their injection, which will subside over 24-48 hours. There are no lasting side effects of the treatment, but we suggest bringing someone with you on the day of your treatment.
After 4-5 days you can expect a small reduction in swelling, stiffness and pain. Some patients may experience a reduction in their previous knee pain after 1-2 weeks, but for most patients, pain relief normally occurs between 4-8 weeks after treatment. A significant reduction in pain may take up to 12 weeks to occur.
It is recommended that you minimise your activity level for 14 days.
Knee rehabilitation programme recovery plan
A personalised patient care plan for patients on the nSTRIDE treatment pathway will include access to our joint pain rehabilitation programme, physiotherapy appointments and follow up with a specialist consultant.
