This operation provides a new surface for the ball and socket that make up your hip joint.

What is hip resurfacing surgery

This operation provides a new surface for the ball and socket that make up your hip joint. It’s used to treat hip pain, most commonly hip osteoarthritis. Unlike a total hip replacement, it retains more of the bone. During the procedure, the damaged surfaces of the femur head (ball of the thighbone) and the acetabulum (socket in your pelvis) are reshaped and replaced with a cover.

What are the benefits of hip resurfacing?

The objectives of this surgery are to improve levels of hip pain caused by primarily arthritic changes in the hip. It is a procedure that spares as much of your own natural bone as possible meaning progression to a full hip replacement in the future is an option.

Is hip resurfacing right for me?

If your hip pain or stiffness is restricting your day-to-day life and non-surgical options like physiotherapy and joint injections haven’t helped, you may be considered for hip resurfacing.

What happens during and after the treatment?

Hip resurfacing is usually done under general anesthetic, but a spinal block could also be used. You will meet one of our anesthetists prior to the operation. Your surgeon will make an incision on the outside of your hip to remove and clean the damaged joint surfaces. These surfaces are replaced with new artificial implants. The surgical site is closed using stitches and dressings.

After the procedure you will be transferred into the hands of our dedicated nursing team who will look after you in the recovery area and inpatients ward.

Recovery

Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment, rehabilitation and advice during your hospital stay, and if appropriate follow-up as an outpatient to support your full recovery.

Short-term recovery

You will be able to walk on the operated leg as soon as you feel able to do so. Usually this will involve the use of walking aides at first and you will have expert physiotherapy input during your hospital stay to facilitate this.

You will discuss the length of your hospital stay and any concerns with the consultant prior to the operation, and will go home once you are able to mobilise safely and deemed medically fit.

Long-term recovery

Your recovery will be guided by physiotherapists and follow up consultations with your surgeon.
