An osteotomy is a procedure usually performed to correct damage caused by osteoarthritis or a deformity. A tibial osteotomy is performed when only one side of your knee shows damage.

What is a tibial osteotomy?

This is a surgical procedure to address a structural alignment issue of the lower leg. This procedure is usually done to help offload joints such as the knee. In realigning the lower leg, the knee will experience normal movement loads more evenly.

At Nuffield Health, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, our experienced orthopaedic consultants will perform a full examination to recommend a plan of treatment that is personalised for you. Following the assessment and imaging results, this may include conservative management with physiotherapy or surgery.

What are the benefits of tibial osteotomy?

If your consultant has determined that you will benefit from tibial osteotomy surgery then the main expected results will be improved mobility, reduced joint pain, and improved function.

What happens during and after the surgery?

Tibial osteotomy surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic and sometimes in combination with a local nerve block. You will meet one of our expert anaesthetists prior to the operation and you will be advised on what is the best option for you if you never had anaesthesia before.

Your orthopaedic consultant will create an incision just below your knee. The surgeon will remove a wedge of bone allowing them to realign the leg, and the new alignment will be fixated with a surgical grade metal plate and screws.

After the procedure you will be transferred into the hands of our dedicated nursing team who will look after you in the recovery area and inpatients ward.

Recovery

Our team of specialist physiotherapists will provide expert treatment, rehabilitation and advice during your hospital stay, and if appropriate follow-up as an outpatient to support your full recovery.

Short-term recovery

You will discuss the length of your hospital stay and any concerns with the consultant prior to the operation. You will go home once you are able to mobilise safely and deemed medically fit.

Long-term recovery

Your recovery will be guided by physiotherapists and follow up consultations with your surgeon.
