Scoliosis is a curvature or bend of the spine. Symptoms of scoliosis can include back pain and intense nerve pain as nerves are compressed by the bend in your spine.
To help diagnose scoliosis in children and adults your GP may order an X-ray or MRI scan. In some cases a CT scan may be needed.
How is scoliosis corrected?
Your GP may refer you to a consultant with special interest in the spine.
Treatment of children with scoliosis can be observation only as the condition often corrects itself as the child grows. Regular x-rays will confirm any changes in the spine.
In more severe cases a body cast or a brace may be used for a period of time to guide the spine back into its correct position.
In adults, treatment may include prescription pain killers, anti-inflammatory medication or nerve blocks to temporarily ease the pain. Exercise and physiotherapy treatments may also relieve your symptoms. Braces can be used to provide extra support but they do not correct any curve in the spine in adult patients.
In cases of a severe or an increasing curve of the spine, or when pain levels are not responding to more conservative treatments your consultant may recommend surgery. Spinal decompression or spinal fusion are two options for correction of scoliosis.
