If a normal ECG does not reveal any problems your consultant may recommend measuring your heart activity over 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days using an event monitor.

What is an event monitor?

An event monitor is a device about the size of your mobile phone. It includes several sticky patches with wire leads attached (called electrodes). You will need to wear the device around your waist for a specified period. You do not need to stay in hospital and you should go about your daily activities (including playing sports) as normal.

We will fit the device to you and show you how to remove and replace the electrodes so you can bathe or shower. Do not make any adjustments to the monitor.

An event monitor does not record your heart activity continuously. Readings are taken when you have symptoms such as dizziness or palpitations. You may need to switch on the device yourself. Some devices switch on automatically when symptoms are present.

Another type of event monitor is called a holter monitor. This device measures your heart activity continuously for the specified period.

Please return the monitor on the specified day. Our staff will analyse the recorded data in order to provide you with an accurate diagnosis.
