About

Mr Andrew Cattell is a specialist knee surgeon with particular expertise in sports knee injuries. He has extensive experience in ACL reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery and patellofemoral surgery.

Mr Cattell was appointed to James Cook University Hospital in 2019 where he maintained a busy NHS practice managing major orthopaedic trauma with an elective practice focused on knee complaints. He subsequently moved to North Tees Hospital in 2024 to focus on his elective surgical interests.

He has maintained an interest in medical education and is the educational lead for the orthopaedic department. He is the clinical supervisor for several registrars and teaches on both local and national specialist orthopaedic exam courses.

His practice centres around individual patient care, ensuring that a diagnosis is clearly explained, and all aspects of potential treatments are discussed and tailored to the individual’s condition and lifestyle to ensure an optimal result.

Mr Cattell studied Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, graduating in 1999. Following this he trained in South Africa for several years gaining a broad experience of trauma and orthopaedics. He then continued his postgraduate training in the United Kingdom, undertaking his specialist orthopaedic training on the prestigious Oswestry rotation in 2011.

He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016 and completed a complex trauma fellowship in Nottingham in 2017 followed by UK-renowned fellowship posts in sports knee and knee replacement surgery in Wrightington Hospital and Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (Exeter) where he gained extensive experience in dealing with all aspects of knee surgery.

Mr Cattell has completed a Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Engineering with his dissertation evaluating the development of a novel knee replacement. His knowledge of engineering and biomechanical principles allows him to tailor his treatments for optimal results and explain treatment options in an understandable manner.
