About
Mr Kumar Abhinav is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Southmead Hospital and Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital. He trained at the Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine, King's College London, University of London, graduating in 2005. He undertook his primary neurosurgical training (brain and spine) in Bristol and Plymouth, which he completed in 2017.
Mr Abhinav subspecialises in skull base, pituitary and cerebrovascular neurosurgery with a focus on complex brain surgery. He also treats degenerative conditions affecting the spine. With his comprehensive training in open and advanced endoscopic endonasal (via nose) surgical techniques, he takes pride in surgically approaching skull base tumours and meningiomas using the most suitable approach (either via nose or open craniotomy) to enhance patient outcomes. His personal goal has been to be provide world class surgical care and clinical opinion to his patients.
In addition to his UK training, Mr Abhinav undertook four years of additional subspecialist clinical operative and research training at leading international neurosurgical centres in the USA. Between 2017 and 2019, he completed two one-year clinical operative fellowships with the Department of Neurosurgery at the prestigious Stanford University, starting with cerebrovascular and open skull base neurosurgery followed by further training in comprehensive open and endoscopic endonasal skull base and pituitary neurosurgery. Prior to that, he completed a two-year research fellowship in the Department of Neurosurgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) from 2013-2015. His time at UPMC was funded by the Ellison-Cliffe Travelling fellowship award from the Royal Society of Medicine, London and the University of Pittsburgh Brain Institute.
Mr Abhinav’s research work has led to multiple peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals, book chapters and presentations at national and international scientific meetings. He is passionate about surgical training towards making skull base surgery safer for patients, and has been an invited faculty and speaker on multiple courses aimed at further training of practising neurosurgeons.
