About
Mrs Nadia Hikary-Bhal was appointed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in 2014. Nadia received her medical degree from Baghdad University in Iraq graduating in 1996. She completed her specialist training in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Menopause Health in South Wales, United Kingdom, and was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training in 2012.
Pelvic Floor Health:
Nadia has dedicated her career to learning about pelvic floor health. Her
approach is to work collaboratively with women, helping them understand their
condition, how it impacts on overall health and conservative strategies for
treatment and prevention. Nadia helps women with options in managing prolapse, urinary
incontinence, initial management of faecal incontinence and mesh complications
where surgery is usually a last resort.
Menopause and Midlife Health:
Menopause is a natural and inevitable part of the ageing process for most women. It is an important milestone that can have significant physical, emotional, and social effects. Maintaining good midlife health and making healthy lifestyle choices is essential for overall well-being and disease prevention. During her final years of training Nadia completed advanced training in Menopause Health and is a British Menopause Society specialist and trainer. Going hand in hand with menopause health is midlife health and healthy aging, as a member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, Nadia takes a holistic approach to women’s health and is an advocate of prescribing Lifestyle Medicine prescriptions helping women understand the impact of lifestyle choices and making changes to help lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
Childbirth and the pelvic floor:
Perineal injury at the time of childbirth can have a profound negative effect on women and their families. Nadia has been a passionate advocate of helping women, sustaining any form of trauma, at the start of her career. She developed the Perineal Trauma Training programme in Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB in 2016 onwards and after years of pursuit officially set up the Perineal Health and Trauma service in 2022. She offers a specialised perineal care service for women suffering with any form of vaginal and vulval trauma, including Obstetric Anal Sphincter injuries, related to childbirth.
Cosmetic Gynaecology:
There are a variety of reasons why a woman might consider a cosmetic gynaecology procedure. Some of these reasons include alleviating physical discomfort or functional issues such as enlarged labia that cause discomfort with sex. Another reason is to change appearance; just as some people choose to have cosmetic surgery elsewhere in the body to enhance appearance some women choose to have cosmetic gynaecology surgery for similar reasons and finally this surgery can be life-changing and increase confidence and self-esteem especially if they have been self-conscious or unhappy about the appearance of the genital area for a long time.
Nadia is a firm advocate of women’s choice and believes that all women should have access to non-judgmental and excellent quality of care. She completed an aesthetic vulvovaginal surgery Diploma at the Alinsod Institute of Aesthetic VulvoVaginal Surgery (AIVVS) in California and is an ongoing member of the institute.
