Sashin Ahuja is a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, Cardiff, UK since 2003.

His practice involves treating all aspects of spinal pathology, ie low back pain, neck pain, spinal injuries, spinal tumours and scoliosis surgery, together with associated conditions related to spinal problems, such as sacroiliac joint and coccygeal pain.

The various spinal procedures include spinal injections (facet blocks, lumbar nerve blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation of facet joints, coccyx injection etc), micro discectomy, spinal decompressions, spinal stabilisation, such as for cervical, thoracic, lumbar and spino-pelvic stabilisations, and correction for paediatric and adult spinal deformities, like scoliosis and kyphosis.

He has experience in newer techniques such as minimally invasive procedures for back pain and pioneered minimally invasive surgery for sacroiliac joint stabilisation.

He is also actively involved in education training (as the lead for the centre’s fellowship programme which has AO Spine recognition) and research (publishing regularly in peer reviewed journals and authored book chapters). He is the current Chair of the UK Spine Societies Board (UKSSB), BASS Past-President (2019-2021), He is an expert adviser to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulator Agency (MHRA) UK.

Research

Despite a busy clinical job I have a keen interest in research and I have more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals.

I have been involved in both clinical and basic science research. I am a Co-Chief Investigator for a NIHR grant FORENSIC (fusion for low back pain study) and for BASS/BSS/ORUK grant for Machine Learning for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. I  have been a Co-Applicant and Principal Investigator on NIHR sponsored trials ie for thoraco-lumbar fractures-PRESTO and bracing for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis-BASIS and am a Principal Investigator for POLYFIX trial for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy.

My basic science research interest is in spinal biomechanics (implant testing, testing various spinal constructs, finite element modelling etc). I have close links with the Engineering Department at Cardiff University, University of Exeter, University of Bournemouth and University of West Macedonia, Greece.

Nationally I have been the Research Chair for British Association of Spine Surgeons (2012-2014) and British Scoliosis Society (2013-2016).
