Thigh lift surgery is a form of body contouring. Excess skin and fat are removed from the thighs.
Liposuction may also be performed during this procedure. Sometimes a buttock lift can also combined with this procedure. A thigh lift is not a substitute for weight loss. Best results are seen when the patient is at target weight.
What happens during a thigh lift operation?
Thigh lifts are usually performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will recommend where your incision will be made based on your personal circumstances. Incisions can be quite long and result in long scars. Wherever possible incisions are positioned so they will be hidden (i.e. within a bikini line).
This procedure can take 2-3 hours depending on how much skin and fat needs to be removed. Segments of skin and fat will be removed and the areas will be tightened to achieve a smooth, firm look. Dressings are applied and temporary drains (small, thin tubes) may be inserted to drain the wound. There can be significant pain and discomfort following thigh lift. You will be given pain relief medication.
Going home following a thigh lift
Length of hospital stay depends on the extent of your surgery. You may stay one to two nights. You will need time off work to rest. Be sure and discuss this with your surgeon prior to your operation.
You will need to wear a tight fitting body garment for the first few weeks to support the area. You should not engage in any strenuous activities until your surgeon releases you to do so. Your scars will be permanent but will eventually fade. You should allow 9 - 12 months for your scars to flatten and lighten in colour.
Body contouring procedures are major surgery. You should be prepared for the recovery process.
What are the complications of thigh lift surgery?
Every surgical procedure has a risk of complications. Be sure and discuss any concerns you might have about these risks with your surgeon.

- Infection in a surgical wound
