Vulval lesion excision at Parkside Hospital
- Overview
Abnormal growths or ulcers in the opening of your vagina (vulva) are called vulval lesions. A vulval lesion excision is the removal of the lesions.
What is vulval lesion excision?
Abnormal growths or ulcers in the opening of your vagina (vulva) are called vulval lesions. In many cases, vulval lesions do not present a problem. However, if you are at all concerned or if your lesions bother you, you should see your GP. In many cases, you will be referred to a gynaecologist for further diagnosis and (if necessary) removal of the lesions. Your consultant may take a sample of the lesion to send to the laboratory for analysis.
What happens during the removal of vulval lesions?
The length and complexity of your operation will depend on the location and size of your lesion. Vulval lesion removal usually takes about 20 minutes. It may be performed under general or local anaesthetic. Your consultant will remove all or part of the lesion. If a wound is created it will be closed using stitches. You may need to wear a sanitary pad for several days.
