The stretching of an artery, or an aortic aneurysm as it is known, occurs when the wall of an artery becomes thinner, causing the artery to expand.

Should it burst the consequences could be fatal. Fortunately, the technology now exists to detect weakened arteries, making their treatment easier.

An ultrasound scan can be used to detect weakened arteries that otherwise do not have visible or external symptoms.
