Mr Nicholas Cooke

Mr Cooke specialises in primary hip and knee replacements as well as complex hip and knee revisions. He also has a specialist interest in metal on metal hip revisions, having performed many revisions and published in this field. Mr Cooke also performs knee arthroscopies for meniscal tears and osteochondral defects, as well as carrying out joint injections for pain relief to hips and knees, often within a clinic setting at the same time as the initial consultation.

Mr Cooke has undertaken extensive research in Birmingham hip resurfacing, measuring the bone density around the prosthesis. This has been presented at regional and national level and published in leading orthopaedic journals. He has also appeared on C4 documentary 'Dispatches', which reported on metal-on-metal (ASR) findings.

Mr Cooke graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1995. He has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon operating in the North East of England for the last 16 years, having moved up to the North East in 1997. He spent six months on a fellowship in Edinburgh Lower Limb Reconstruction Unit working with the leading surgeons in the country and now has extensive experience in lower limb reconstruction. Mr Cooke's NHS work takes place at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.

Mr Cooke is passionate about education and teaching. Working alongside NHS England, he offers a live stream, direct surgeons' view of hip and knee replacement surgery on a bi-monthly basis  By wearing sophisticated Realwear camera equipment, Mr Cooke is able to live stream his surgery to a lecture theatre with over 50 students from multiple specialities, such as Medical Students, nurses, physiotherapists, radiology students etc. The technology involved allows Mr Cooke to converse intraoperatively with the students, answering questions and making the whole teaching experience more meaningful and relevant. 

Private clinics are held several times a week at Nuffield Tees and also Nuffield York.

“I was in severe pain, unable to walk unaided and had not left the house for months! After attending physio I was finally sent for an MRI scan in October 2019. Then, in January 2020 I saw Mr Cooke at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital, which is when my miserable life changed.  He gave me hope and said things could be done!  I had my first hip replacement operation just a few months later in March, and the care I received was excellent. Every member of staff was kind, friendly and very attentive. Because of COVID-19 the after-care was done remotely but excellent non-the-less and I felt well cared for.

In December 2020, I had my other hip operated on which also went really well, completely pain free from coming out of theatre.  All staff again were excellent during a very hard time working around the COVID-19 restrictions.
