Tips for new gym starters
You’ve decided on your goals and you’re ready to get going, but how can you make sure you succeed at your fitness goals long term? It’s easy to let it slip if you’re not enjoying it, so make sure your goals are reachable and that you’re doing activities you enjoy.
Here are five tips to get you started:
- Don’t copy others – they may be doing exercises specific for injury or their goals
- Build up your time in the gym gradually to keep you motivated
- Be flexible and try new classes or a new routine
- Discover the other services your gym provides
- Find exercise you enjoy – it has to be sustainable long term, so make sure you’re having fun.
Your gym checklist:
- Gym bag to carry everything in
- Towel to wipe down equipment
- Gym clothes and suitable trainers
- Headphones and music device
- Joint supports if you need them.

Gym workouts for beginners
Going to the gym for the first time doesn’t need to be daunting. These beginner workouts help you get the most out of your gym time.
Upper body workouts
Build strength in your shoulders, back and chest with this upper body circuit workout.
Kettlebell workout
Working on everything from your grip strength to your core, this session will help you build explosive power and lean muscle.
Group exercise classes

Health Assessments
Through several different lifestyle, medical and non-invasive tests, our health assessments offer a comprehensive view of your health with an experienced GP or physiologist, covering key health issues like diabetes, heart health, cancer risk and mental health.
Physiotherapy
Whether you're recovering from an injury or want to maximize your training, our on-site physiotherapists can help prevent injuries and get you back up and running. All members get a 20% discount on initial and follow-up physiotherapy appointments.
Mental Health
We’re here to help wherever and whenever you need us, with a range of flexible, effective support options, available face-to-face or online. All members get a 20% discount on mental health support.

Programmes For All
At Nuffield Health we provide free health and wellbeing initiatives to address unmet healthcare needs – from joint pain to long COVID – right here in your local community.
Joint Pain
This programme aims to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve mental health by encouraging sufferers to participate in regular exercise. Feedback has been exceptional, with 69% of participants in July 2022 achieving clinically significant improvements.
COVID-19 Rehab Programme
Developed in collaboration with the NHS and leading industry experts, this programme is a blend of physical and emotional support designed to help an ever-growing number of people who are finding it difficult to recover from the long-term effects of COVID-19.
