Perhaps you are self conscious about the shape or size of your ears or how your ears stick out. A pinnaplasty will give your ears a more normal appearance.
A pinnaplasty is a procedure to improve the appearance of your ears.
What happens during a pinnaplasty?
Depending on the age and condition of the patient a pinnaplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. If your procedure is performed under local anaesthetic you may be given a sedative to help you relax.
A pinnaplasty usually takes about one hour. Your surgeon will make a cut at the back of your ear and peel off some skin from the cartilage. They will change the shape of the cartilage so your ear lies closer to your head. If your ears are not symmetrical (evenly shaped on both sides) you surgeon may correct this as well. They will close the wound with stitches a apply a dressing.
After your pinnaplasty
You should be able to go home the day of your procedure. In some cases an overnight stay is required. After a few days your dressings can be removed and replaced by a headband. You will need to wear this headband day and night for the first week following surgery.
Any pain or discomfort can be controlled using over the counter pain relief. You should rest and avoid any strenuous activity in the first two to three weeks. The full benefits of pinnaplasty may not be visible until six weeks after your surgery.
Most patients make a quick recovery from pinnaplasty. Any surgical procedure can result in complications:
- Pain
- Bleeding
- Bruising
- Infection
Specific complications of pinnaplasty:
- Numbness
- Asymmetry of the ears
